Professor Charles Mackay, Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, Visits Jinan Microecological Biomedicine Shandong Laboratory for Exchange and Discussions

On 29 January 2026, Professor Charles Mackay, Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, Chief Expert at the Shandong Provincial Centre for Analytical Testing, and Honorary Dean of the School of Pharmacy at Qilu University of Technology (Shandong Academy of Sciences), led a team specialising in novel drug development and pharmacology research to the Jinan Microecological Biomedicine Shandong Laboratory for exchange and discussions. The delegation was received by Wu Nanping, Executive Deputy Director of the Laboratory, Li Xingang, Deputy Director, and heads of relevant departments.

The delegation toured the laboratory's exhibition hall and multiple core research platforms, including multi-omics, animal models, and pathology facilities. They examined advanced instrumentation, specialised research resources such as germ-free animal models, and gained comprehensive insight into the laboratory's operational management mechanisms, major scientific breakthroughs, and research support systems. The delegation expressed high recognition for the laboratory's strategic scientific planning and phased achievements in the field of microbiome biomedicine.

During the symposium, Wu Nanping extended a warm welcome to the delegation on behalf of the laboratory. He provided a detailed overview of the laboratory's core research directions in microbiome biomedicine, progress in translating research outcomes, and its external collaboration framework. Professor Mackay's team introduced their research domains and scientific advancements, highlighting their work on gut microbiota and metabolic products regulating the immune system, particularly in preventing and treating major chronic diseases.

Both parties concurred that the laboratory's research platforms and technological strengths align closely with Professor Mackay's team's accumulated expertise in immune regulation, novel drug development, and analytical testing, indicating substantial potential for collaboration. Moving forward, they will leverage this exchange to deepen communication, refine cooperative frameworks, establish efficient collaboration platforms, and promote resource sharing and complementary strengths across relevant fields. This partnership aims to jointly tackle scientific challenges, accelerate the translation of research outcomes into practical applications, and contribute to the high-quality development of Shandong Province's biomedical industry.

Also attending the meeting were relevant personnel from the Shandong Provincial Analytical Testing Centre and the Jinan Microecological Biomedicine Shandong Laboratory.
