This is a new ‘top stream’ laboratory

‘The laboratory is one of the first six provincial laboratories built in Shandong Province, and is the only new research and development institution focusing on human microecology research in China, which was registered on 13 August 2021.’ Prof Wu Nanping, Executive Deputy Director of the Jinan laboratory, introduced.

The laboratory integrates the advantageous resources of Zhejiang University, Nanjing University, Shandong University, Shandong First Medical University, and establishes strategic cooperative relationships with many domestic well-known pharmaceutical manufacturers, with the purpose of ‘domestic leading, irreplaceable, world-class, and leading the development’, and with the major strategic needs of the country and the world's scientific and technological frontier as the traction, focusing on the ‘microecology biomedicine’. Microecology biomedicine’ in the field of national science and technology innovation strategic needs and biomedicine international power of strategic science and technology frontiers, benchmarking international advanced laboratories, focusing on the construction of “microecology and disease”, “microecology and health and aging” and “microecology and health and aging”, “microecology and health” and “microecology and aging”. The positioning of the laboratory is unusual, and the team members are all ‘big names’ in the industry. Ms Li Lanjuan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, is the director and legal representative of the laboratory. Up to now, more than 100 talents of various types have been introduced and reserved, including 6 academicians, 6 national talents such as Jieqing and Youqing, and 19 provincial talents such as Taishan Scholars.

The main building of the laboratory is located in the 7# building of the first phase of Jinan International Medical Centre Medical Science and Technology Innovation Industrial Park, which is expected to be delivered at the end of June 2024. In addition, a total of about 3,000 square metres of macroscopic instrument platforms, animal houses and about 5,000 square metres of GMP pilot bases are also planned and constructed in the second phase of the industrial park, which is expected to be delivered in 2025.

Human micro-ecology is closely related to health, disease and aging

More and more studies show that human health is closely related to microecology.

‘Human microecology is equivalent to “organs” with important roles.’ Professor Wu said, the human body exists a large number and complex structure of microbial communities, the total weight of about 1.5 kg, equivalent to the weight of the human liver, these colonies constitute the human micro-ecosystem, the number of genes encoded in the system can be up to 150 times the number of genes in the human body, equivalent to the human body's ‘second genome’.

The human micro-ecosystem to maintain balance, is one of the important guarantee of human health. If there is an imbalance in the micro-ecological flora, it may cause sub-health or disease. ‘For example, autism, there have been studies showing that its pathogenesis, healing mechanism and the regulation of intestinal flora have an important relationship.’ Prof Wu said.

In terms of disease healing, the lab is researching new anti-infection strategies from the perspective of human micro-ecological balance, focusing on the balance of bacterial flora to reduce the emergence of super-resistant bacteria, protect organ function and enhance healing effects. For example, in the fight against the new coronavirus, academician Li Lanjuan put forward the concept of ‘four resistance and two balance’ (anti-viral therapy, anti-shock therapy, anti-hypoxemia and multi-organ failure, anti-secondary infections, and maintenance of water-electrolyte-acid-base balance and micro-ecological balance). ‘This approach is very effective in the treatment of critically ill patients with novel coronavirus infections.’

Product development and application of market prospects, ‘micro’ unlimited power

Only when scientific research results go out of the laboratory to the production line of enterprises, can they really become a ‘panacea’ to help industrial development.

Micro-ecological preparations belong to the strategic emerging industries supported by the national policy, micro-ecological preparations products and technologies will be the focus of vigorous promotion. Currently, micro-ecological preparations have been applied in many fields such as medicine, feed, agriculture and food. Data show that the average annual growth rate of China's microecological preparation market is about 15%.

At present, the laboratory has stocked more than 10 ready-to-transform results, including: microecological probiotic preparations, intestinal microecology detection reagents, hydrogel antibacterial haemostatic materials, and so on. In the next step, the laboratory will widely carry out cutting-edge scientific exploration, training of innovative talents, construction of public scientific research platforms, transformation of scientific and technological achievements, to create a base for the training of innovative talents, a new source of high-tech and a new engine for the incubation of achievements, and to build a micro-ecological biomedical field from the ‘basic theory innovation’, ‘key technology breakthroughs’, ‘key technology breakthroughs’, ‘micro-ecological biomedicine’, ‘micro-ecological biomedicine’, and the ‘basic theory innovation’.
